The structure of verbal abilities in young and older adults

    Get PDF
This article may not exactly replicate the final version published in the APA journal. It is not the copy of record.Four language sample measures as well as measures of vocabulary, verbal fluency, and memory span were obtained from a sample of young adults and a sample of older adults. Factor analysis was used to analyze the structure of the vocabulary, fluency, and span measures for each age group. Then an "extension" analysis was performed by using structural modeling techniques to determine how the language sample measures were related to the other measures. The measure of grammatical complexity was associated with measures of working memory including reading span and digit span. Two measures, sentence length in words and a measure of lexical diversity, were associated with the vocabulary measures. The fourth measure, propositional density, was associated with the fluency measures as a measure of processing efficiency. The structure of verbal abilities in young and older adults is somewhat different, suggesting age differences in processing efficiency. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved

Conformational behavior of the linear hexapeptide senktide: A receptor specific tachykinin analog

    Get PDF
AbstractA receptor selective linear hexapeptide tachykinin analog, senktide, is shown to be highly ordered in solution. The conformational restriction is attributed to steric and electrostatic interactions produced by N-methylation of the third amino acid residue in the sequence and the negatively charged N-terminus. The structure of senktide is described as a dynamic mixture of similar conformations where the predominant one is a distorted antiparallel hydrogen bonded β-pleated sheet. The observed senktide-receptor specificity is suggested to result from a selection of this or a closely related conformation

Integrating Career Development Into The Accounting Curriculum

    Get PDF
This paper describes a series of integrated career development activities offered in several required courses which are designed to help accounting majors gain a competitive edge in the job market.  Supported by a partnership between the School of Business and the Academic and Career Planning Office, the Career Tool Kit program consists of classroom presentations followed by hands-on applied experiences in which students become proficient in preparing resumes, writing cover letters, interviewing, and using all available resources to find a position that best matches their skills, interests, and values.  Unique features of the Career Tool Kit are the placement of program elements within required courses (to ensure that all students participate) and the scheduling of these elements over a three-year period (to allow time for students to prepare an intentional job search strategy)

Metabolomics Reveals New Mechanisms for Pathogenesis in Barth Syndrome and Introduces Novel Roles for Cardiolipin in Cellular Function

    Get PDF
Barth Syndrome is the only known Mendelian disorder of cardiolipin remodeling, with characteristic clinical features of cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy, and neutropenia. While the primary biochemical defects of reduced mature cardiolipin and increased monolysocardiolipin are well-described, much of the downstream biochemical dysregulation has not been uncovered, and biomarkers are limited. In order to further expand upon the knowledge of the biochemical abnormalities in Barth Syndrome, we analyzed metabolite profiles in plasma from a cohort of individuals with Barth Syndrome compared to age-matched controls via 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. A clear distinction between metabolite profiles of individuals with Barth Syndrome and controls was observed, and was defined by an array of metabolite classes including amino acids and lipids. Pathway analysis of these discriminating metabolites revealed involvement of mitochondrial and extra-mitochondrial biochemical pathways including: insulin regulation of fatty acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, biogenic amine metabolism, amino acid metabolism, endothelial nitric oxide synthase signaling, and tRNA biosynthesis. Taken together, this data indicates broad metabolic dysregulation in Barth Syndrome with wide cellular effects
